Why Composition Wins Drafts

A coherent comp beats a roster of S-tier picks. Your draft has a win condition or it doesn't. Below are the six archetypes that consistently appear in Tier 1 play in May 2026.

1. Wombo Combo (Hard Engage)

Example: Malphite top · Sejuani jungle · Orianna mid · Jhin ADC · Rell support. Every champion has AoE CC stacking on top of one ult chain. Win condition: one teamfight, ace, take map.

2. Pick / Catch

Example: Camille · Vi · LeBlanc · Caitlyn · Thresh. Designed to remove one enemy before fights start. Win condition: 5v4 every objective. Best when enemy has a fed carry to delete.

3. Poke / Siege

Example: Jayce · Nidalee · Xerath · Varus · Karma. Burns objectives down with long-range damage. Win condition: kill towers without ever fighting. Loses to engage comps that close the gap.

4. Protect the Carry

Example: Shen · Ivern · Lulu · Kog'Maw · Janna. Everyone keeps one hyperscaling carry alive. Win condition: late-game teamfights at full build. Patience-dependent comp.

5. Split Push

Example: Fiora · Graves · Twisted Fate · Ezreal · Karma. One sidelaner pressures a tower while four hold mid. Win condition: forces enemies to make impossible choices. TF ult creates 5v4 fights.

6. Skirmish / Bruiser

Example: Aatrox · Lee Sin · Yone · Kalista · Pyke. Wins small fights, contests every objective. Win condition: never let the game settle. Best on aggressive solo queue rosters.

How They Differ in Practice

Engage comps want short games (under 30 min). Protect comps want long games (35+ min). Pick comps thrive in mid-game tempo windows. Knowing which timing window your draft owns matters more than knowing any specific matchup.

How to Identify Yours in Champ Select

Look at your team's three big cooldowns. If they all land in the same fight, you have a wombo. If they all create vision or pressure, you have a pick comp. If you can't tell, your team didn't draft a comp — draft for damage and pray.
